Refuge on the (Under)net
Mar. 24th, 2026 06:30 pmMy friend
genderjumper shared a post with me recently about what she calls the "Undernet". As the process of enshittification of the internet continues -- spurred by corporations and tech-bros looking to make a quick buck -- we, the people of the internet, will need some place to find refuge and nurture the connections we have managed to create despite it all.
To the degree that there are still places like Dreamwidth, we must rally behind and support (monetarily! when we can) them so that they can endure the pressures of capitalism and the demands of digital refugees.
But for those of us with some level of skill in creating or managing personal websites, I believe we must stand our ground and create our own spaces, to the best of our ability. Personal websites, digital gardens, and the like. And furthermore, link them together! Create networks that people can navigate and feel a sense of adventure as they navigate the Undernet.
